A burning candle is a source of light and heat. It is usually a cylindrical rod of a fatty substance, such as beeswax or stearin, which is solid at room temperature, with a cotton cord through the middle: the wick. When the wick is lit, the fat near the wick melts and is drawn into the cord by capillary action. In the higher parts of the wick the fat becomes gaseous due to evaporation and decomposition and burns underneath the wick.
