At first I was focused on the American Mill and its reflection in the calm water. The peace was disturbed by this canoe that penetrated my image. Afterwards it turned out that this produced an interesting picture.
In the background you can also see the Tower of Wormer. The tallest building in the Zaan region in North Holland. The almost 119 meter high concrete tower on the Veerdijk in Wormer was built in 1970 on behalf of the Government Buildings Agency for the PTT.
De Herkules is located in the Kalverpolder in Zaandam, north of the hamlet of Haaldersbroek. It is an American Wind Motor. It was installed as a polder mill in 1922. In 1993 it was replaced by an electric pumping station.
The mill was developed in the United States and was used for irrigation purposes. A modified shape with a smaller wheel was produced in Europe by Herkules Metallicus of Dresden. In the Netherlands it was used as a polder mill. About 200 of these mills were installed between 1902 and 1925, especially where a steam pumping station would be too large and expensive. This was especially the case in North Holland and Friesland.
