About ‘Card Players, Theodore Rombouts’

"Theodore Rombouts (Antwerp, 2 July 1597- there, 14 September 1637) was a Brabant baroque painter from the Antwerp School.

Rombouts was an apprentice in the studio of Abraham Janssens in Antwerp. In 1616 he left for Italy where he studied the works of various Renaissance and Baroque masters who would later have a great influence on his work. When he returned to Antwerp in 1625 he became an official master painter. He painted genre pieces and strictly religious scenes with a strong chiaroscuro effect in a Caravagesque manner. Influenced by the Baroque artists around him, he began to work more and more in the softer style that Rubens also had. He died in his forties."
