Beautifully dressed exuberant people, 'zaate Hermeniekes' on the Vrijthof ... Maastricht has it all. On the right you see the Giant of Maastricht. On the occasion of the arrival of Emperor Charles V and his son (1550) a festive entry (ommegang) was organized in Maastricht. It is historically established that a gigantic giant with a length of seven meters was carried along. In a pouch there were two dolls. They represented the two governors of the time, the duke of Brabant and the prince-bishop of Liège. With these dolls, the Maastricht guilds symbolically expressed that they had these two rulers 'in their pocket'.
