Fantasy drawing made in October 2022. Carnival revellers on the Vrijthof square in Maastricht in front of café den Ouden Vogelstruys. Also called the Struys or the Struisvogel. For many Mestreechtenere, carneval is the most beautiful event of the whole year. According to Rhineland tradition, Maastricht carnival largely takes place outdoors. Most carnival revellers can be found mainly on the Vriethof, the Markt and O.L-Vrouweplein, but there are also a few noteworthy pubs that I have always enjoyed visiting during the crazy days (if you got in, at least). Like Café den ouden Vogelstruys. During the three crazy days, -as they say themselves- café in den ouden Vogelstruys is the true epicentre of Maastricht culture. Once the big wooden building burned down but it was reopened in 1730. It has always had the name Struysvogel or Vogelstruys and has housed a café for centuries.
