Caspar David Friedrich was a German painter and draughtsman from the period of Romanticism. In 1798 he went to Dresden and stayed there all his life. He was friends with Goethe and Novalis. Friedrich and his friend Philipp Otto Runge have unconsciously created an innovation in the visual arts.
