About ‘Cassis. Cap Lombard, Opus 196, Paul Signac - 1889’

In the collection of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. Paul Signac (1863-1935) is considered the main promoter of neo-impressionism, of which Georges Seurat (1859-1891) is the founder. In their paintings, neo-impressionist artists apply colour in dots and stripes, rather than planes, to paint light. They aim for the contrasting colours to blend in the eye of the viewer. Cassis. Cap Lombard, Opus 196 is one of the seascapes Signac paints on the sunny Côte d'Azur in 1889. He titles his series with an opus number, referring to the music: the paintings are a symphony of colour.
