Durbuy got its first fortified castle around 899. It was destroyed a century later and in the 11th century, Henry I of Namur, Count of Durbuy, had the castle rebuilt. From the twelfth to the thirteenth century, Durbuy and its castle is owned by John, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia, who has it integrated very early into the defence system of the Counts of Luxembourg.
In the 15th century, Durbuy passes into the hands of Philip the Good, along with the entire county of Luxembourg. In 1726, Durbuy came into the possession of the d'Ursel family. In 1731, Conrad-Albert d'Ursel ordered the construction of a new castle. In 1880, Countess Augusta d'Ursel had the castle thoroughly modernised, giving it its current appearance.
Despite the many renovations of the castle, and changes to the town, its location has remained unchanged. A rock on which the castle still requires, the picturesque of the town of Durbuy, nestled in the valley of the Ourthe, can still charm many people.
