Kathedrale Basiliek Sint Bavo, Leidsevaart, Haarlem The Kathedrale Basiliek Sint Bavo is a Roman Catholic church in Haarlem that serves as the cathedral of the Haarlem-Amsterdam diocese. The building was designed by Jos Cuypers. Construction began in 1895. The church was completed in 1930. The church is dedicated to St Bavo, the city's patron saint, whose worship originated from Ghent with which Haarlem had a trading relationship. On 2 May 1948, St Bavo's church was elevated to basilica status. In the same year, the building could be inaugurated as a cathedral. The building is the only Roman Catholic cathedral in the Netherlands actually built for that church function. The other churches performing this function did not get the bishop's seat within its walls until later. In addition, a number of churches that were indeed built as cathedrals (e.g. Utrecht's Dom) lost this function due to the Reformation. The Cathedral Basilica Saint Bavo is, after St John's Cathedral in Den Bosch, the largest church in the Netherlands.
