Santa Maria Cathedral, the Gothic cathedral is three-aisled, has transepts, many chapels, and a heavy quatre tower from the 16th century. Eight richly decorated turrets rise above it. The monumental west facade has two bell towers with openwork spires with saw-shaped profile. On the north side is the escalada dorada or golden staircase from the Renaissance period. The portal of the Sarmental (right transept, the cloister is adjacent to it) is well preserved. The sculpture in the tympanum is very realistic. Jesus teaches the evangelists and the apostles there. A long staircase between the sacristy and the cloister leads up to it. In the cathedral there are many works of art, funerary monuments, including those of "El Cid", altarpieces and a beautiful choir stalls. The chapel "del Condestabele" is octagonal, has eight small pointed towers and a rich wall decoration. The funerary monument of El Cid Campeador, the most famous son of Burgos, and Doña Jimena is located under the domed vault. The railings between transept and choir consist of beautiful wrought ironwork. The walnut chairs of the choir stalls are all different and have palmwood inlays.
