A true splendour in spring
In the former miners' settlement there are still many cherry trees, sometimes entire avenues. The blossom is usually at its peak towards the beginning or middle of April.
The Meerbeck Colony is a former miners' settlement in Moers-Meerbeck. It is one of the large workers' colonies in the Ruhr area. It was built as a garden city between 1904 and 1907. The 2000 flats were intended for the newly recruited workers from the East. When the mine lost its independence at the end of the 1960s, the unity of colliery and housing estate began to crumble. In 1980, the city of Moers decided to take over part of the settlement. It had the houses restored and renovated. Today Meerbeck is considered one of the most beautiful districts of Moers.
