Chinese astrology is based on traditional astronomy and calendars. In contrast to the Western form, Chinese astrology does not calculate the positions of the sun, moon and planets at the time of birth, which means that it is not really astrology in the European sense, but is more akin to numerological techniques. Sometimes a resemblance is sought between the 12 'constellations' of the West and the 12 traditional animal signs of Chinese astrology, but they do not coincide entirely. Moreover, the Western form involves a division of the year into 12 signs, while with the Chinese each year is assigned a sign, starting from the Chinese New Year. The 12 animal characters (the "twelve earth branches") are also linked to the 5 elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) and the Yin and Yang principle.
