Paris-Roubaix is a one-day cycling race held every spring in northern France.
The one-day race is known as The Hell of the North (L'Enfer du Nord). Paris-Roubaix gained its reputation as a cobbled race only after the First World War. While cobblestones were not unknown in that area, before then many races were still ridden on dusty roads made of rubble and gravel. After many of those roads were destroyed in World War I, they were repaired with cobblestones.
This photo was taken on the famous and especially infamous cobbled section of the Forest of Wallers-Arenberg. At the beginning of this cobbled section is a railway viaduct. From this viaduct you have a nice view of the cobblestones and the riders passing here.
