The cockatoos (Cacatuidae) are a family of 22 species. Together with the families Psittacidae (parrots, parakeets and lories) and the Strigopidae (New Zealand parrots) they form the order of parrots (Psittaciformes).[1] It has been said that the name "cockatoo" is based on the Malay word for elder sister ("kakak tua"), but the name is probably no more than a sound imitation.[2] In that Malay the word has also come to mean "pincers". This refers to their particularly strong, curved beak.
