The cockatoos (Cacatuidae) form a family of 22 species. Together with the families Psittacidae (parrots, parakeets and loris) and the Strigopidae (New Zealand parrots) they form the order of parrots (Psittaciformes).[1]. The name "cockatoo" is based on the Malaysian word "kakaktua", which means "older sister" ("kakak" means sister and "tua" old). In that Malay, the word "pincers" has come to mean "nijptang". This refers to their particularly strong, crooked beaks.
