The body of the Colani GT was made of glass fibre reinforced Vestopal from Chemiewerke Hüls. The 3-part plastic bodywork was screwed onto the beetle frame with axles, engine, gearbox and platform frame. Because of this plastic construction the Colani GT had a weight of only 550 kg, 170 kg less than the VW Beetle 1200, and the aerodynamics were also much better than the Beetle, which had a top speed of twenty kilometres per hour more. After about 261 VW Colani, however, there were difficulties with the production, because the then VW boss Heinrich Nordhoff (*6 January 1899; †12. April 1968 in Wolfsburg) increasingly blocked himself from supplying the carrier base. So they had to buy parts from other manufacturers of VW special bodies, which was later no longer profitable and Heinz Kühle, partner of the Colani GT production withdrew.
I have been practicing vintage car photography for more than 35 years and here I mainly photograph normal everyday vehicles which were still on the road en masse over 30 years ago. But also cars with extraordinary, beautiful design. From time to time I take pictures of cars, motorcycles and trucks of recent times, when they have particularly beautiful shapes, curves and somehow tempt to dream and drive like a BMW Z8. I find these automotive beauties not only in museums, but also in specialized workshops for vintage cars, with collectors who have invited me to photograph their classics or often in dark, dusty sheds and halls or simply parked at the roadside.
