Until the early 19th century, houses in Willemstad were almost all white.
At the beginning of the 19th century, there was a doctor on Curacao who observed that there were many people with eye problems. He thought this was due to the reflection of the sun on the white houses. The doctor therefore pleaded with the governor of the island, to come up with an ordinance to paint the houses in a color instead of the bright white. The homeowners were thereby legally required to paint their houses a color.
This law was in effect for about a hundred years. At the beginning of the 20th century, this law disappeared, but houses are still painted in all colors, even though it is no longer mandatory.
