While driving through the countryside in our low countries, I am always happy when I see cows that are allowed to be outside in the beautiful green meadows. But I get sad when I see that nowadays there seem to be no calves at all. Cows give more than twice as much milk as they used to, due to good breeding programs. So it should be enough for the calf, at least for the first few months, with enough left over for trade.
But no, the calves are very quickly separated from the cows and fed some kind of watery fake milk. The mother cow is left stunned.
Behind the barn, I found a kind of out-sized doghouse all the calves separated. The mothers could hear and smell them, but could no longer see, feel or feed them. And that bothered me. Hence this digital work.
