About the artwork

Lunch Atop a Skyscraper is based on an originally world-famous photograph from 1932, photographer unfortunately unknown. This edit is to allow the photo to be printed in larger size. Something about the background of this image, based on the real photo from 1932. Once upon a time, thousands upon thousands of migrants poured into New York, from Europe and especially many from Ireland. In those days, there were no amenities. Work had to be found. So the fathers took on anything that could help feed their families. At great risk were especially the men in the construction of the huge skyscrapers. Very few got over 45. No matter how careful or one was, accidents happened. There were no safety nets for those who fell from the high iron beams. This image was taken 260 metres above the ground. Many almost became acrobats to keep themselves upright on the beams. They were the heroes of New York. Here they pose for a group of photographers while taking their lunch break. At the request of the Rockefeller Centre. For publicity.
