Crocus (Crocus) is a genus in the lissen family (Iridaceae), comprising about ninety species. Of these, about a third are autumn-flowering.
Crocuses are mainly native to the mountains around the Mediterranean Sea. The largest number of species originate from the Balkans and Asia Minor, with the exception of Crocus vernus (L.) Hill, which is found as far away as Central Europe (in the Alps and Carpathians), and a few species such as Crocus alatavicus Semenova & Reg. and Crocus korolkowii Regel ex Maw, which originate from the mountains of Central Asia.
