About "Crypt in the Lebuineskerk in Deventer"

by Dries van Assen

About the artwork

The crypt in the Lebuinus church was built around the year 1040. It was part of the Romanesque basilica. The Romanesque architectural style with its thick walls and round arches is clearly recognisable. The Latin word crypta means 'the hidden'. A crypt usually served as a burial place for important people. It is not certain whether people were ever buried in this crypt. However, relics of saints were kept there, which many people worshipped there. Relics are small remains of the body, e.g. pieces of bone.
This crypt was built of tuff, except for the six sandstone columns. Those columns are beautifully carved: three are grooved and three are scaly.
Also to be seen are:
- a well connected to the river IJssel
- wall paintings
- remains of an altar
- several niches with Romanesque round arches.
There also used to be a sarcophagus (a stone coffin). That sarcophagus is now at the back of the church.
