Tips for use

About ‘Curacao’ by Brenda Verboekend

The colours of the houses

Did you know that the colours of the houses in Willemstad used to be predominantly white?

Until the early 19th century, houses in Willemstad were almost all white. White lime plaster was used to cover the walls. Some colours were occasionally used, but this was minimal.

In the early 19th century, there was a doctor on Curacao who noted that there were many people with eye problems. He thought this was due to the reflection of the sun on the white houses. The doctor therefore pleaded with the island's governor to come up with an ordinance to paint the houses in a colour instead of the bright white. The homeowners were thereby legally required to paint their houses a colour.

This law was in force for about's hundred years. In the early 20th century, this law disappeared, but houses are still painted in all colours, despite it no longer being compulsory.
