Cycling through the palm forest - analogue

by Silva Wischeropp

The analogue image was taken with a slide film and the FE2 camera. I discovered this photo motif during my three-month photo trip to Vietnam near Nha Trang in the year 2000. Equipped with motorbikes in my new circle of holiday acquaintances, we went on a trip together to the surroundings of Nha Trang and I discovered this poetic bicycle scene.

Vietnam is home to a rich variety of palm species. Among the most notable are the coconut palm, the Vietnam hemp palm and various species of the Lanonia and Guihaia genus.

Common and notable palm species
Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera): This is particularly prominent in the Mekong Delta, where the province of Ben Tre is known as the "land of coconuts" and offers ideal growing conditions.

Vietnam hemp palm (Trachycarpus geminisectus): A rare species known for its relative ease of care and hardiness.

Lanonia dasyantha: This small palm comes from the rainforests of northern Vietnam and grows at altitudes of 100 to 1000 metres, often with an underground or creeping trunk.

Guihaia: Species of this genus are found in both southern China and northern Vietnam and are closely related to the Trachycarpus palms.

Palm trees add a typical tropical charm to the Vietnamese landscape and are an iconic sight in many regions, from beaches to forested hills.
