About the artwork

A kind of erotic dance inspired by the legend of the goddess Ishtar and in the biblical passage of the beheading of John the Baptist is called the dance of the seven veils.

The rapid adaptation to western cabaret as a dance of an erotic nature facilitated its development as a striptease in which the dancers presented an image of related sexual desire.

According to the Babylonian myth, Ishtar, completely naked, was able to enter eternity and save her lover. But Ereshkigal regretted letting her in and forbade her to leave immediately. Over time, Ishtar's legendary setbacks became a kind of oriental erotic dance (like belly dancing), in which the belly dancer - until she is partially or completely naked - strips herself of the seven veils.

Painting of a topless exotic dancer, a belly dancer in an Arab environment. With her veils the model makes an exciting, erotic image sensual. Furthermore, the girl's hips are partially exposed and her belly, boob, shoulder and arms. Furthermore, the woman has large flowers in her hair, a peacock's crown.

Gaston Bussière (Cuisery, 24 April 1862 - Saulieu, 29 October 1928) was a French painter and illustrator. He is considered part of the movement of symbolism. His erotic depictions, of which this is one, were very appealing.
