On the edge of de Cocksdorp rises this proud lighthouse, Eierland, an icon that has guided ships along the jagged coast since 1864. With its deep red colour and white top, it almost seems to watch over the houses around it, as if protecting the village. The sky was a clear blue, making the contrast with the tower even more pronounced. It remains extraordinary how a structure becomes so intertwined with nature and the people around it.
Standing here, you feel the power of the sea and the tranquillity of the island at the same time. The wind carries the smell of salt, and as you look up at the light that has been shining for a century and a half, you realise how small you really are. For many visitors, this is the landmark of Texel, a place that makes you stop for a moment, literally and figuratively. A place that shows how man and nature can go hand in hand.
