Among the twinkling December lights on the Market Square in Maastricht, the torch of Jan Pieter Minckelers burns. Jean-Pierre Minckelers or J.P. Minckeleers (Maastricht, baptised 2 December 1748 - died there 4 July 1824), was a Liège-Dutch scientist and inventor. He is considered the discoverer of light gas (coal gas) and gas lighting.
For years, the torch burned like an eternal pilot light, watching over the city of Maastricht. Nowadays, you pay for burning the torch via a vending machine. The fiery light puts the square in a pleasantly warm light. It is almost Christmas. Like shining stars, the Christmas lights bring atmosphere and cosiness.
