When the deer rut begins in September, the hinds are restless and the males make themselves heard. Challenging and measuring strength is part of it. The belling and thumping of the antlers can be heard far and wide and is unusually exciting. It is early autumn and when it cools down there is a chance of fog that makes the whole spectacle special.
