Delfshaven, City district
Delfshaven is an administrative district of the municipality of Rotterdam. Delfshaven has an area of 5.80 km² and had a population of 76,215 in 2019. Originally part of Delft, Delfshaven became an independent municipality in 1795 and was annexed by Rotterdam in 1886.
Delfshaven came into existence in 1389, when the Delfshavense Schie was dug to give the city of Delft a connection to the river Maas. Since then, ships from Delft could reach the Nieuwe Maas via the Delft and Delfshaven Schie. Around the lock, the port town 'Delfshaven' emerged. It had the status of a 'colony of Delft'. A setback in its growth occurred when, at the end of the Angles and Codfishes (around 1490), the Angles caused massive destruction. At the beginning of the 16th century, Delfshaven had just over 100 houses and 400 inhabitants.
