Delft Blue Elephant

by Christian Ovís

Delft Blue Elephant depicts an elephant’s head facing straight ahead. The large ears spread out on either side, whilst the trunk runs down the centre and curls slightly at the bottom. Two white tusks protrude forwards alongside the trunk. Blue flowers, leaves and graceful tendrils cover the head and ears. The background is completely dark.

The floral decoration follows the curves of the forehead and becomes denser and darker on the trunk. On the broad ears, large floral forms alternate with smaller leaves. The light falls mainly on the top of the head, the outer edges of the ears and the tusks. Dark shadows around the eyes and beneath the ears lend depth to the image. The almost symmetrical composition keeps the focus on the central trunk and the powerful shape of the head.

This animal wall art combines the recognisable silhouette of an elephant with the refined colour palette of Delft blue. In a living room, hall or study, the piece can serve as a striking focal point. A minimalist décor allows the broad ears and rich ornamentation to take centre stage. From a distance, the head dominates; up close, the small floral motifs and the fine lines on the trunk become visible.
