Delft Blue Garlic

by Christian Ovís

Delft Blue Garlic depicts a garlic-like bulb as a richly decorated blue-and-white design. The broad, round base consists of elongated segments that converge at the top into two tall, outwardly curling tendrils. Dark blue flowers, leaves and tendrils fill the white surface. The bulb stands on a small round base and is positioned centrally against an almost black background.

Narrow dark lines follow the vertical segments and emphasise the curve of the shape. At the top, these lines continue into the graceful curls. A large flower at the front forms a striking detail amongst the smaller ornaments. The light falls mainly on the left-hand side and the protruding edges. On the right-hand side, softer shadows create depth. The dark background keeps the focus on the floral decoration and the striking outline.

This wall decoration gives a familiar kitchen theme an unusual, decorative twist. The piece would suit a dining room, kitchen or hall with blue accents and calm base colours. The blue-and-white palette echoes the look of Delft blue. From a distance, the rounded silhouette with its tall curls is particularly visible; up close, the flowers and the fine lines draw more attention. This creates a still life with both clear forms and a wealth of detail.
