Right along the Geul river is Den Halder Castle. It is a fortified residential tower that was located against the medieval city wall at the time. Its origins therefore date back to the 14th century, when Dirk IV of Valkenburg started rebuilding the city wall.
Later, it was converted into a residential tower, which involved adding a storey and corner towers. Part of the original estate is now laid out as a city park
