About the artwork

Der Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider) was a small group of like-minded artists in Germany that existed from around 1911 to 1914. The renewal movement originated in Munich. Usually a blue horse was depicted, while here there are two horses, also one in black.

Franz Marc (Munich, February 8, 1880 - Braquis, March 4, 1916) was a German expressionist painter. Franz Marc tried to convey emotions with colours, each colour having its own symbolism and meaning.

He concentrated mainly on animal portraits, trying to grasp the inner essence of the animal rather than its outer appearance. The colour symbolism he developed played a major role in this. Under the influence of Cubism he also greatly simplified the forms. As a result, his paintings tended more and more towards the abstract. His latest works clearly refer to the true expressive power of abstract expressionism.

Wassily Kandinsky (Moscow, Russia December 16,[1] 1866 - Neuilly-sur-Seine, France December 13, 1944) was a Russian-French painter and graphic artist. His style of painting initially belonged to Expressionism, sometimes also to Symbolism. Kandinsky was one of the painters who gave form and philosophical foundation to abstract art in the first quarter of the twentieth century.
