About the artwork

Photographing the colonnade at the back of the Reichstag in black and white has a particularly powerful effect because it draws attention to shapes, lines and contrasts, highlighting the building's timeless architectural beauty. The absence of colour enhances the geometric patterns and structures of the columns, and the natural shadows create depth and dynamism. Black-and-white photography also evokes a sense of nostalgia, which fits well with the historical context of the Reichstag, enhancing both the aesthetic and symbolic value of the building.

The Reichstag in Berlin is an iconic building that has played a central role in German history. Originally built between 1884 and 1894, it served as the seat of the Reichstag, the parliament of the German Empire, and later of the Weimar Republic. The building became famous for its tragic fire in 1933, which was used by the Nazis to tighten their grip on power. After World War II and the division of Germany, the Reichstag fell into disrepair until it was restored after the reunification of the country in 1990 and refurbished as the seat of the Bundestag, Germany's current federal parliament.

This columnmade is a detail at the back of the huge building. It is a quieter but no less important part of the building, with its own unique charm and historical significance.
