About "Ditlev Blunck - Manhood, From the series The Four Ages of Man - 1845 (1/4)"

About the artwork

Blunck painted four parts of man's life, man. In each of the paintings from the four panels we see a baby, a boy, a grown man and an old man in a boat with whom his life at that moment surrounds him as his mother, wife and children or family and his grandchild.

Ditlev Conrad Blunck (Münsterdorf, 22 June 1798 - Hamburg, 7 January 1853) was a German painter. As a German he is usually considered to be part of the Danish Golden Age. In 1828, Blunck began a long study trip, which eventually took him to Rome via Berlin, Dresden and Munich. Initially, he mainly painted genre works and portraits in the typically Danish-realistic style, with roots in Romanticism.

In 1841 he was expelled from Denmark for homosexual acts. As a result, he left the country and even took up arms against Denmark in the First Schleswig War (1848-1852). Despite being persona non grata in Denmark, he was commissioned by King Christian VIII of Denmark to paint the four-volume cycle "The Ages of Man" for the Royal Painting Collection.
