I took this photo on a sunny day in Drenthe, in the middle of a quiet moorland. It was one of those days when the sky was clear blue, with enough clouds to give some dynamics in the background. I wanted to create an image that shows how beautiful and simple the landscape here can be. That's why I chose a low viewpoint. From the grass and among the flowers, you get a much more direct sense of the field itself. That low angle also created the soft blur in the foreground that I was looking for. For me, that gives extra depth and makes the image just a little bit calmer to look at.
The heathland was full of yellow flowering plants, which contrasted nicely with the sky. What appeals to me in places like this is the space and silence: you only hear the wind through the grass and the occasional insect. Nothing special, but that is exactly what makes it nice to be here and to photograph it.
With this photo, I did not want to show a perfectly stylised landscape, but rather the atmosphere of an ordinary summer day in Drenthe. A field that you might walk right past, but that shows much more up close. The result is a calm, natural photo that captures a piece of that day.
