The opera house in Dresden, named after its architect Gottfried Semper, is the opera house of the Saxon State Opera Dresden, which has a long historical tradition as the court and state opera of Saxony. It is located on Theaterplatz in the historic city centre of Dresden near the River Elbe. It is named after its architect Gottfried Semper. The Dresden Semperoper was originally built between 1838 and 1841. On 13 and 14 February 1945, the Semperoper fell victim to the bombing of Dresden. It was rebuilt from 1977 until 1985.
Dresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony. With around 570,000 inhabitants, Dresden is the second largest Saxon municipality after Leipzig and the twelfth largest city in Germany. The name Elbflorenz (also Florence of the North or Florence on the Elbe) became established as an epithet for the city of Dresden at the beginning of the 19th century. The title was originally intended to honour Dresden's art collections and its architecture.
Other world-famous sights in Dresden include the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger.
