About "Dune landscape watercolour; The red lighthouse on the wadden island of Texel"

by Galerie Ringoot

About the artwork

Dune landscape and view of "The Red Lighthouse" on the Wadden Island of Texel (1992) One of the Dutch Wadden Islands.

Watercolour on paper by Dutch illustrator, artist and writer Hans Sturris, painted in 1992. The original watercolour measures 56x37 cm.

Illustration from a series of watercolour paintings made on the island.

The sturdy red lighthouse at the northern tip of the island is the symbol of Texel for many people.

Texel got a lighthouse in 1864, after years of campaigning for it by the Texel notary Kikkert. This was because the surrounding waters were so dangerous for shipping that ships were sinking year after year before the lighthouse was erected. You can learn more about this in a brief exhibition in the lighthouse.

In World War II, a significant part of the Georgian Uprising or Russian War took place around the lighthouse. Bullet holes can still be seen in the wall of the tower. (Text taken from the website of the VVV of Texel)
