Echoes of the Scottish Highlands

by Wim's Pastelart

In this sweeping and monumental dry pastel work, artist Wim Cuppens captures the raw, mystical and breathtaking grandeur of a mountain landscape in the Andes. The panoramic painting masterfully demonstrates his ability to capture the dynamism and profound stillness of untamed nature in layered colour pigments.

The composition immediately draws the eye across a rugged, gold- and moss-green valley stretching between imposing mountain ranges. The massive mountain flanks on either side are rendered with a powerful, grainy texture in deep slate-grey, charcoal and earth tones. Subtle, light chalk strokes suggest the rough rock textures and the layered nature of the peaks. The valley floor, built up from expressive strokes of ochre yellow, olive green and deep shadow tones, exudes the pure atmosphere of the high plateau.

The undisputed star of this masterpiece is the atmospheric, stormy sky. The sky bursts open in a dramatic interplay of deep indigo, cobalt blue and bright turquoise, interspersed with fleeting, white wisps of cloud. Cuppens has created a fabulous sense of movement here; the clouds seem to race over the mountain peaks and roll into the deep valley like a soft, misty veil. This contrast between the solid, steadfast mountains and the dynamic, fleeting sky creates a rich visual vibrancy and a spectacular sense of depth.

This panoramic artwork strikes a perfect balance between pure realism and expressive impressionism. It brings an atmosphere of ultimate freedom, the power of nature and timeless luxury to any high-end modern residential interior or professional corporate collection.
