About the artwork

Under the Yoke (Burning the Brushwood) is the most famous work by Eero Järnefelt . It was first mentioned in words from the Kalevala, while the name appeared in brackets when it was exhibited in 1897. The scene was painted in Lapinlahti, North Savo, where the Järnefelts spent the summer of 1893 at Rannan Puurula's farm. The tradition of burning wood was still practised in the area, and the artist made sketches of the land and photographed the men and women working during the summer. Model for the main character in the painting was Johanna Kokkonen, a 14-year-old maid. Järnefelt blackened the girl's face with soot, added a surrounding smoke halo and painted such's reproach in her eyes that it speaks to the viewer's heart on behalf of these heavily burdened people.

Eero Erik Nikolai Järnefelt (Vyborg, 8 November 1863 - Helsinki, 15 November 1937) was a Finnish painter. He is counted among the movement of realism.
