Eilean Donan Castle in black and white, Scotland

by ErwinFloor-Photography

Dark storm clouds hang over Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most famous castles. The castle stands on a small island at the point where three lochs meet: Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh. An old stone arch bridge connects the island to the shore. Behind the castle lie the mountains of the Scottish Highlands. There, the light breaks through the clouds.

The water is almost completely still. The castle is reflected in the loch and loose tufts of seaweed float on the surface. In black and white, the image is all about light, form and atmosphere: the threatening cloud cover, the soft sheen on the water and the silhouette of the castle against the mountainside.

I took this photograph whilst travelling through the Western Highlands, on my way to the Isle of Skye. I deliberately chose black and white. This best brings out the timeless, somewhat mysterious character of this place, like a scene from an ancient Scottish legend.

This print suits both modern and classic interiors, whether in the living room, study, hall or above a sideboard. It pairs beautifully with natural materials such as wood and linen, and a calm colour palette of grey, black and white. The wide landscape format works particularly well on a large scale, for example above a sofa or in a long corridor.
