Elusive is a digital artwork created by a fusion between a drawing and a painting. The drawing was created using drawing techniques of pencil and charcoal and the painting consists of multiple layers of various painting techniques.
The work was inspired by a photo I took on the beach at Landal Stroombroek. There was a water pump that my son, who was four at the time, appeared to love. The boy has a talent for pumping. No need to worry. I could take a sunbath.
After half an hour, he called out to me, "Daddy! Look how much water is in the tub." With difficulty I got off my seat. What you don't do for your children. I was so comfortable.... He looked at me so proudly and said, "Look how beautiful!" And indeed it was. It was magnificent. The reflection of the sun shone beautifully on the surface of the water. "That is indeed beautiful, Owen!" I said and gave him a high five. Then I grabbed my camera from my pocket. "I'm going to go back to pumping Dad!" Said he, to which I replied, "Just wait on that..."
He wanted to pump every day of the vacation, and he was allowed to. However, as beautiful as the sun shone into the water that first time we did not observe it again after that. The times and weather conditions must have played a role in that.
Once back home I saw the picture on a large screen and started to experiment with it. I made the silver color of the container that contained the water blue. Then I applied several layers of paint to this work to achieve the final texture. I think the layering of this is very successful. The end result is an abstract figurative work of art, in which I think that the elusiveness of the water and light is beautifully rendered.
