About "Evelyn De Morgan, The Love Potion - 1903"

About the artwork

The woman in the painting is often categorized as the cunning witch from fairy tales: A witch in bright yellow, with an insensitive, cruel face, who mixes a drink to upset the lovers who can be seen on the terrace in the distance. Along the shelf next to her are books about Black Magic, one of which bears the text "Paracelsus".

More correctly, the painting should be categorized in the series of allegorical paintings about the progress of the soul towards enlightenment. Despite the inclusion of a black cat, whose presence refers to the stereotypical depiction of devilish sorcerers, the subject of the painting is presented as a scholar. She sits in a bright study surrounded by luxurious furniture and equipment. The books on the bookcase by her side are a clue and contain works by some of the greatest scientific and philosophical minds and were texts that the spiritist movement knew well in their pursuit of enlightenment and spiritual enrichment.
Evelyn De Morgan (London, 30 August 1855 - there, 2 May 1919) was an English painter associated with the movement of the Pre-Raphaelites. She studied spiritualism, was an advocate of social reforms such as women's suffrage and was interested in moral issues.
