About the artwork
In this painting the element rain, thunder and lightning are personified as strong, beautiful female spirits, causing chaos and turbulence in the sea below. On the left, dressed in yellow, is the spirit of rain pouring grey water from an endless bottle. On the right, lightning - a red-winged figure with winged feet, throws lightning bolts into the storm. Central at the top is the spirit of the thunderclouds, dressed in dark blue with its dark wings and drapes merging into the thunderclouds around her.
In the middle of the statue, however, is a small oasis of sanctuary, away from the pandemonium of the foreground, which gives hope for a calmer future. The painting was executed in the middle of the Boer War and as such can be read as a symbolic representation of the chaos of war and hope for a return to peace.
Evelyn De Morgan (London, 30 August 1855 - there, 2 May 1919) was an English painter associated with the movement of the Pre-Raphaelites. She studied spiritualism, was an advocate of social reforms such as women's suffrage, and was interested in moral issues. She derived her themes from religious and allegorical figures and scenes and strong female figures, often with a message of hope and courage.
