Japanese wireweed is an exotic species from Japan which was first found on the Dutch coast in the 1970s. It grows quickly and its main stems, some of which are metres long, have a number of regularly alternating side branches on which small leaves are attached. Small floating bladders, up to 5 mm in diameter, are found at the end of short stems.
