The Lockheed Martin-F-35 Lightning II, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter, is a fighter jet that emerged from the US Department of Defence's Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme. As long as the programme was unsuccessful, the F-35 was also called Joint Strike Fighter, but since Lockheed Martin's design won over Boeing's design (model X-32), the name F-35 Lightning II was chosen. Soon after, the name of the programme also became F-35 Lightning II programme. This fighter jet is a further developed version of the Lockheed Martin-X-35. Three variants of the F-35 are being produced: a standard version (F-35A), a variant that can land vertically (F-35B) and a naval variant for use on aircraft carriers (F-35C).
