About the artwork
In this image, Father David deer, a rare species that was almost extinct. In the wild, these animals no longer live. The deer, in this picture, have mighty antlers topped by a soft grey-haired skin, the bark. After a few months, this skin hardens and the deer start shedding the skin on trees. In the picture, there is peace in the pack, the deer are ruminating and the hinds are grazing the greenery.
I often visit museums and am inspired by all those works of art from the golden age, the clouds, the use of light and shadow and composition. This image was taken in April, which, when the light is right, creates the gorgeous pastel tones I am looking for.
In this image, everything falls into place, the calm colour of the animals well-exposed so the attention goes there. Backlight used to blur the rear forest edge for the depth effect. The beautiful water feature with a soft shade of blue and the budding trees with the fresh green spring colours. Clouds with a slight threat as in a painting by a Dutch master.
I often photograph animals and this image is special to me because of its pristine and tranquillity. Animals saved from extinction in a fairytale setting. The animals are completely at ease and I literally felt their calmness, imperturbability and confidence in my presence.
