In a twilight landscape, with a deserted beach in the background, stands an elegant lady in a black evening dress. Her red voile hat casts a mysterious shadow over her face. On a chain beside her: a white swan, stately and calm. In its beak, the swan carries a cord from which a lamp dangles. The soft light from this lamp falls on a wondrous scene nearby: a man is sitting relaxed at a small table. He is smoking a cigarette, reading his newspaper and sipping a steaming cup of coffee.
The absurdity of the image - a swan as a lantern holder, a posh lady with a necklace on such a majestic bird - does not detract from the power of the moment. For despite the bizarre context, the whole thing exudes calm, familiarity and homeliness. It is not the circumstances that define the feeling of home, but the little things: the newspaper, the coffee, the ritual of turning a ciggie. This surreal image, composed of countless photographic fragments, shows that home can be anywhere, as long as the right elements are around you
