The Ferris Wheel (also known as the Chicago Wheel) was a 75-foot-tall Ferris wheel designed by George Ferris. It was the first Ferris wheel in the world and served as a crowd pleaser for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was a progressive piece of engineering at the time. Ferris had been inspired by bicycle wheel technology whereby the spokes of drawn iron keep a wheel in tension. The Ferris wheel had 36 gondolas. In total, 1440 passengers could sit in the Ferris wheel at the same time.
