The Italian designer Pio Manzù created the first small car for Fiat with a transversely mounted engine and front-wheel drive, which had previously only been available on the Fiat 128 (1969-1983). And because of the front engine inside it was even more spacious and yet almost 20 cm shorter than a VW Beetle. It was also almost one meter longer than the Fiat 500.
