Flower Still Life in a Glass Vase (1660), Jan Peeter Brueghel, This lush bouquet depicts a variety of flowers: roses, parrot tulips, anemones, carnations and moonflowers. However, when these plants are found in nature, they do not bloom at the same time of year. Either Jan Pieter Brueghel studied them individually while they were in bloom, or he used imported models. He would occasionally alter the appearance of the plants, such as by lengthening individual stems, in order to make the image seem more harmonious. After being trained by his father, Jan Brueghel the Younger, who was also a successful painter, Brueghel specialised in flower still lifes.
